An air fryer is one of several appliances that can produce crispy, browned food at home. Understanding how it stacks up against the alternatives — deep fryer, convection oven, microwave, toaster oven — makes it easier to decide what to buy and what to reach for once you have one.
Why this comparison matters
"Air fryer" gets used as if it describes a unique cooking technology, but the underlying mechanism — fast-moving hot air circulating around food in a small chamber — is shared with several other appliances. They differ in chamber size, fan strength, and the kind of cooking they were designed around. The comparisons below cover each pairing on the same axes: taste and texture, speed, capacity, energy and counter space, and clean-up.
Air fryer vs deep fryer
The deep fryer is what air-fryer marketing usually compares against, and it's the most lopsided pairing of the lot.
- Taste and texture. A deep fryer submerges food in hot oil, which is why classic fried-food results — uniform golden colour, glassy crunch on a thin batter, the specific mouthfeel of a doughnut — are easier to hit there than in any air fryer. An air fryer gets close on most dishes but rarely identical, especially with foods designed for deep frying like fresh-cut chips and tempura.
- Speed. A deep fryer cooks faster once the oil is up to temperature, but reaching that temperature takes longer than an air fryer's preheat. For one or two batches, the air fryer is usually quicker overall.
- Capacity. A 5–6 quart air-fryer basket roughly matches a small countertop deep fryer in volume but cooks in single layers, so output per cycle is similar.
- Energy and counter space. An air fryer draws around 1,400–1,800 W; a small home deep fryer is in a similar range. The deep fryer needs storage for oil between sessions and a larger counter footprint when in use.
- Clean-up. No contest. Air-fryer baskets rinse out; deep fryers need oil to be filtered, drained, and eventually disposed of safely.
Verdict: reach for an air fryer for everyday cooking, weeknight family meals, and frozen foods. Reach for a deep fryer when you specifically want classic deep-fried results and are willing to deal with the oil.
Air fryer vs convection oven
A full-sized convection oven is the closest mechanical relative to an air fryer. Both move heated air with a fan; the difference is scale.
- Taste and texture. Convection ovens give very similar results to air fryers when the food is in a thin layer near the fan. The reason an air fryer often crisps better is geometry: in a small chamber the air moves faster across the food's surface, which speeds up moisture loss and browning.
- Speed. Convection ovens take longer to preheat — often eight to ten minutes — and cycle their elements more, so a small batch is faster in an air fryer. For larger trays the convection oven catches up.
- Capacity. No comparison: a full oven holds multiple sheet pans; an air fryer holds a single layer. If you cook for a household of four or more, this is the deciding factor.
- Energy and counter space. A 30-minute air-fryer cycle uses far less electricity than heating a full oven for the same time. The air fryer takes counter space; the oven doesn't.
- Clean-up. Air-fryer parts are usually dishwasher-safe; oven racks and drip pans take more effort.
Verdict: for solo, two-person, or small batches, an air fryer typically wins on speed, energy, and crisp. For bigger meals, sheet-pan dinners, or anything that needs to roast slowly, the oven wins. Many households use both.
Air fryer vs microwave
These two cook in completely different ways and aren't really substitutes — but they're often compared because both are fast countertop options.
- Taste and texture. Microwaves heat by exciting water molecules. They warm food through but don't brown it and almost always leave previously-crispy surfaces soggy. An air fryer's hot, moving air does the opposite: it dries surfaces out, which is why reheated pizza, chips, and fried chicken come out closer to fresh.
- Speed. The microwave is faster for raw warming — soup, vegetables, a mug of liquid. The air fryer is comparable for reheating most solid foods and produces better results.
- Capacity. Microwaves usually have a larger interior than an air-fryer basket, but they don't crisp, so the comparison is mostly academic.
- Energy and counter space. A microwave generally uses less power per minute, but cooking sessions are short either way, so the daily-energy difference is small.
- Clean-up. Both are easy. Microwaves are wiped down; air fryer baskets are rinsed.

Air fryer vs toaster oven
Toaster ovens are the appliance air fryers compete with most directly for kitchen counter space. Many newer toaster ovens advertise an "air fry" function — usually a stronger fan and a perforated tray.
- Taste and texture. A dedicated air fryer typically crisps slightly better than a toaster oven's air-fry mode, because the chamber is smaller and the fan is closer to the food. The gap is small for most foods and not noticeable for anything reheated.
- Speed. Air fryers preheat faster (often under three minutes versus five or more). For a full tray of food, toaster ovens are competitive.

- Energy and counter space. Both occupy similar amounts of counter; the toaster oven is usually deeper, the air fryer usually taller. Power draw is similar.
- Clean-up. Air fryers are generally easier — fewer racks, removable basket, often dishwasher-safe.
Verdict: if you don't already have a toaster oven, a basket air fryer is the simpler and faster everyday tool. If you already use a toaster oven for toast and small bakes, a combo unit may make more sense than two separate appliances.
Decision criteria: which one to buy first
If you're choosing between these appliances and don't already own any of them, the most useful question is what you cook most often:
- Mostly frozen and convenience foods, reheated leftovers, weeknight proteins. Start with an air fryer. It does these jobs better than anything else and they're the most common reasons people end up wanting one.
- Mostly home-baked and slow-roasted dishes, meals for four or more. A full oven is non-negotiable — and you probably already have one.
- Mostly defrosting and quick warming. A microwave covers the use case. An air fryer is a poor substitute for liquids and pastes.
- Mostly small bakes, toast, and re-crisping. A toaster oven with an air-fry mode covers most of the air-fryer use cases plus a few it can't do.

The honest answer
Most kitchens benefit from having both a full oven and one fast countertop crisping tool. Whether that tool is a basket air fryer, an oven-style air fryer, or a toaster oven with an air-fry mode is mostly a question of how you cook day-to-day and how much counter space you can spare. None is universally better — they win on different axes. Two common mistakes when comparing: judging only on price (a cheap appliance you won't use is more expensive than a costlier one you reach for daily), and assuming any "air fry" mode equals a dedicated unit (some toaster ovens lack the fan strength and chamber geometry to match).
